Genetics or Smart Work

“I can't gain muscle! I'll never be a great ----- without getting stronger. I guess I'm a hard gainer...”

I have heard variations on that theme so many times over the years it makes me sick. It's the old argument for genetics and the excuse to bypass smart work. Smart work is the difference between mediocrity and greatness.

Working hard is not enough, you have to work smart. That is why Atomic Athletic sells books and DVDs. They are not big ticket items, like treadmills or leg presses, but they are the foundation of the thought process required for success. If you want to become a stronger athlete, start here:

I like to point out Michael Jordan as a perfect example. Study that guy's career, not just the PR side of it. Jordan had good genetics for basketball, but he wasn't seven feet tall. He did not even show a lot of hope for his future career in high school or early college. Yet, he worked very hard and intelligently for years and years. Sure enough, he got better and better every year, until he was considered one of, if not the, best basketball players of all time.

Michael Jordan worked smart. He built a very solid foundation and then built on that. That is what you must do in strength training, for any athletic endeavor.

Over the years, the most common question I have been asked is, “What should I have learned first?”

Well, I created the “Train Like a Strongman Vol 1” DVD to show the classic basis for free weight strength training that applies to ALL athletics. From Bruce Lee's strength training for martial arts to throwing the javelin or a basket ball, this is the foundation.

Almost four years later and a lot of studying down the road, that DVD still stands up. I have studied the use of other tools and literature, some of which are pretty exotic, and I would still have everyone start with that DVD.

Check out the links for more information.

Here is the DVD link again, and there are more on that page:

Live strong,

PS Of course genetics play a serious part in your success at anything, Michael Jordan would not have made it as a jockey. I hope you get the idea here. Work smart.
